April 30, 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 27, 2015, Philadelphia: The Board of the Friends of Hermione-Lafayette in America, Inc., has announced Chef Walter Staib the Culinary Ambassador to the Ship’s 2015 Voyage in the U.S. Since filming an episode of his television show, A Taste of History, on the deck of the Hermione in France, Chef Staib has been enamored of this “freedom voyage,” and all it represents.
“It was exhilarating to be on the authentic life-size, handcrafted replica of the vessel that Marquis de Lafayette boarded on March 10th, 1780 at the mouth of the River Charentes, inPort des Barques, to bring news of full French support of men, money and arms to General George Washington.”
As Culinary Ambassador, Chef Staib will host curated culinary dinners with historic menus in several U.S. ports-of-call and give lectures and cooking demonstrations in others. He will promote the voyage and its mission to remember the important historical event that made possible the liberties we cherish today.
Dinner Reenactment on June 26, 2015 in Philadelphia at City Tavern – a place where Marquis de Lafayette met General George Washington and forged a life-long friendship
One important event is a dinner recreation of a famous lunch that took place on May 4th, 1781, when the then Captain of the Hermione, La Touche-Treville, invited Samuel Huntington, the then President of the Continental Congress of 1781, and the whole Congressional delegation for lunch on board of the Hermione…they stayed for hours in what turned into a boisterous dockside dining extravaganza.
When the replica Hermione will be moored in Philadelphia’s Independence Seaport, French and American dignitaries and friends of the Hermione will be on board for the “Hennessy Cur Non” cocktail toast and then move to City Tavern for a re-enactment dinner of the 1781 lunch. Chef Staib has been researching diaries, letters and ship records to recreate that lunch as historically as possible today. Wines from Moët Hennessy, Founding Partner of the Hermione Voyage 2015, will be served.
A dinner reenactment planned in Boston too!
In Boston, on July 11th, as the Hermione will be moored in Rowe’s Wharf, Chef Staib will craft an evening event that begins with a cocktail reception at the renowned Boston Athenæum, one of the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries and cultural institutions in the United States, followed by a sunset dinner a short distance away on the deck of the shop. The menu will be crafted by Chef Staib from the era of Lafayette!
