2015 – The Year of Hermione Comes to the United States

A Letter from Miles Young

Editor’s Note: On January 21, 2015, Miles Young, President of Friends of Hermione-Lafayette in America, Inc., addressed a letter to all the supporters and followers of Hermione’s historic return to the United States with all the latest news and links.

Dear Hermione Supporter:

I am writing to wish you a very Happy New Year.  For all of us who are enthused by, involved in and working for the incredible Hermione Voyage 2015, this will be a year to remember.  To remind you, on June 5th 2015, the Hermione will arrive in Yorktown, Virginia, and begin her epic journey up the Eastern seaboard.

During the last year, hundreds of volunteers have expressed their support in so many tangible ways for Voyage ’15.  But in the brief five months left before the arrival of the Hermione, there is still a great deal to do.

Our new web site, www.hermione2015.com, has been receiving very positive reviews.  It is the major conduit of information about the progress of the project. Our social following on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest continues to grow, with thousands of fervent fans following the project online. Our current social reach is more than one million people, and we expect that to grow to several million by the ship’s arrival in June.

With so many parts to this historic voyage, I just wanted to signal for our supporters a few important markers along the way from now to June:

1. The Program

A program of performances, exhibitions, and educational and cultural events have been in planning – in different ports and states – on different schedules, for over a year.  Details of most of these are now close to finalization.  We intend to publish a full and final program in February. Here is a direct link to the programs.

2. Fundraising

It is important to remind ourselves that we have not yet raised all the funds we need to complete this voyage.  There is still a gap that we need to fill.  In this light, may I ask you to consider how you can support the second phase of our social fundraising program, a series of events and galas in the state of Florida? The highly enthusiastic Florida committee, led by Brigitte van den Hove-Smith and Jean Heuschen,  deserves your support.  The events will take place in:

MIAMI GALA:  Reception at the French Consulate:  January 22nd, 2015

TAMPA GALA:  Reception at the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum:  February 18th, 2015

PALM BEACH GALA:  Black-Tie Event at the Sailfish Club of Florida:  March 24th, 2015

NAPLES GALA:  Black-Tie Event at the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club:  April 12th, 2015

Please encourage anyone you know who might be interested to attend.  Here is a direct link to the events and ticket information.

3. Hospitality offerings of the Hermione

In addition to the sponsorships that we have already signed up, the Hermione Voyage 2015 depends on our ability to sell the use of the Hermione while she is in each port of call.

During Hermione’s inaugural visit to Bordeaux in November last year, we learned just how effective this could be. In a world where corporate events are desperately searching for novel experiences, a breakfast, lunch, cocktail or dinner on board the Hermione offers an experience of a lifetime. Not only is the space unique, but also the captain and the crew are included for tours and questions about their experiences.  We have a rate card, to which this is a link.

Please, if you can think of any company or organization that might be interested in taking advantage, do let Judi Kilachand, our Executive Director (judi.kilachand@friendsofhermione.org), know. Judi also has a complete list of the available itinerary slots by port.

Finally, it remains for me, on behalf of the Board and Executive Committee of the Friends of Hermione-Lafayette in America, to thank you most sincerely for your wonderful and enthusiastic support for the Hermione Project. This is truly an amazing gathering of volunteers, and we are both humbled and enthused by your commitment.

Sincerely yours,
